Know Your Heart

G’day and welcome to my site! I’m Dr John D’Arcy.

You know what? Knowledge is power and that’s especially true of your health and that of your family. 80% of the conditions which ‘knock us off the perch’ before our time, are preventable.

There is so much information; it’s hard to find facts which are based on strong evidence so they can be incorporated into your life style and health plan. It’s so vital to develop that health plan so you can understand how your body works and what can go wrong.

Let me be your broker in that search for healthy facts and allow me to join you on your journey to health and well being.

Dairy and your heart

International dairy expert Prof Peter Elwood joins Dr John to dispel some of the myths around dairy and our heart health.

Prof Elwood presents the results of twenty years of longitudinal studies into the health effects of consuming dairy products. The results may surprise you considering how fashionable low-fat dairy is today. Of course, his general recommendation will not - eat a balanced diet - but he argues that we should all make milk and dairy an important part of that diet.

Cow's Milk Allergy and Intolerance

It is very common for people to use the terms Allergy and Intolerance as if they are one in the same thing.

In this segment Dr John speaks with Associate Prof Pete Smith from the Griffith University Medical School about how we can spot the difference between Cow Milk Allergy and intolerance and determine what are the most appropriate treatments. In a nutshell an allergy is our body's defense mechanism at work whilst an intolerance is a failure of our body's chemicals to deal with the introduction of another chemical.

EBC-46 - Promising Research into the Treatment of Cancer

The discovery of EBC-46 not only indicates the importance of conserving our forests for the future so that more medications may be discovered, but offers hope that there will be a new option for humans with cancer.

Despite the interest in EBC-46 it's so important not to offer "false hope". Human studies, planned to begin next year will take time and will be rigorous and it will take 5-7 years to develop.

Nonetheless, all journeys start with the first step but that step has already been taken.

Avoid the side-effects of Prescription Drugs

Many people, especially young people, take unnecessary risks with prescription drugs.

Sometimes this involves the mixing of prescription drugs with high-energy drinks. In the most serious of cases the consequences have been fatal and in others people have been known to do things like drive the car or raid the fridge without any knowledge.

Bowel Cancer - it's something to talk about

People are funny about the bowel. They simply don’t like talking about it.

Colorectal Cancer

Colon or bowel cancer is the most common internal cancer in Australian men and women. Eight thousand new cases are diagnosed every year and often the main symptom is bleeding from the bowel. Too many people put off a proper investigation and treatment. Although rectal bleeding is the classic sign of cancer, it’s important to recognise that any persistent change in bowel habits, such as feeling of incomplete emptying, ongoing constipation or diarrhoea, is worth reporting.

Dr John D'Arcy provides more information on how to protect against Colorectal Cancer.
